2019: Give your guber tickets to Owerri zone or lose our support--Owerri indigenes in USA tell political parties
... Urge Ndi Imo to reject Okorocha's monarchical system of government
As the race for the 2019 governorship polls in Imo state hots up, a diaspora group under the aegis of Owerri Senatorial Zone Congress in the United States of America has called on all the registered political parties in the state to zone their governorship tickets to Owerri senatorial if they hope to get the support of the people of Owerri zone.
This is even as the congress has urged the people of Imo State to reject Governor Rochas Okorocha's monarchical system of government, which government by family and hereditory.
Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists ahead of its first major convention in Oklahoma City, USA, in June 2018, the congress said it is the turn of the Owerri senatorial zone to produce the next governor of the state come 2019.
According to the President-General of the congress, Engr. Charles Anele noted that in spite of the fact that Owerri zone parades men and women who are eminently qualified to man the government of the state, the zone has remained the political weeping child of Imo having only governed the state for just one year and 10 months.
Engr. Anele noted that Owerri zone has made a lot of sacrifices for the development of the state and accommodated all the other zones in every sense including ceding the 1999 and 2007 governorships to Orlu and Okigwe zones respectively for peaceful coexistence.
He said it would be hipocritical, deceitful and selfish for the people of Imo State and Ndi Igbo in general to be crying about marginalisation at the federal level and demanding that power be shifted to south east while perpetrating and advocating the opposite at home.
The president insisted that the demand Owerri Senatorial Zone Congress in USA that the governorship position be reserved for Owerri zone in 2019 was a matter of and not a privilege because according to him, the people of Owerri zone had contributed immensely to ensure equity in the state.
“We, the Owerri Senatorial Zone Congress in USAare holding this convention to ensure we mobilise support for all political parties that will give their governorship ticket to Owerri zone. The message is simple and clear because it is going to be the turn of Owerri zone to produce the next governor of the state in 2019 and that is not negotiable. The zone has men and women with the capacity to govern the state and so this congress is ready to drive this message home which is for equity and fairness.
“If you take a look at the governance of the state, you will discover that Chief Sam Mbakwe from Okigwe zone and the first executive governor of the state governed for four years and three months and Chief Ikedi Ohakim also from Okigwe had also ruled for four years between 2007 and 2011. Now, Chief Achike Udenwa from Orlu zone was there for eight years between 1999 and 2007 and again Owelle Rochas Okorocha from the same Orlu zone will be completing his eight years in 2019 making Orlu 16 years on the saddle. But the Owerri zone had only held the office during the time of Chief Evans Enwerem for only one year and 10 months. So, we are saying that for equity and fairness, it is the turn of Owerri zone in 2019,” he said
Also speaking, the general secretary of the Owerri Senatorial Zone Congress in USA, Dr. Sam Azubuike and the chairman political action committee of the congress, Dr. C.Y Osuoha pointed out that the issue of zoning the next governorship of the state to Owerri Zone was not negotiable and warned that any group or indigenes of the zone who sabotages the project by supporting Orlu or Okigwe zone would not be treated kindly by the people of Owerri zone.
"Anybody supporting a candidate from Okigwe or Orlu will not succeed because the people of Orlu and Okigwe already know that it is the turn of Owerri Zone and 'm glad that most of them are working with us to realise this project. For this, we'll like to warn that any of the political parties that fails to pick its gubernatorial candidate from Owerri zone has already failed because they will never get the support of the people of the zone”, Dr Azubuike said.
The congress also condemned in its entirety, the reckless endorsement of Governor Okorocha's son-in-law, Uche Nwosu for governor in 2019 by some people from Owerri zone including lawmakers who were elected to serve the interest of their people and called on those involved in that to quickly retract it.
According to Mr. Kelvin Nkwocha and Engr, Sampson Ude, the communication director, 2019 governorship seat is very sacrsant for Owerri zone and if the people or the zone work against that interest, that would be the last chance for the zone.
They therefore called on the people of Owerri zone to unite in the course of ensuring that an Owerri man becomes the next governor come 2019 and shun any distraction that would stop the project.
Others who spoke included the vice president, Princess Gilbert; Chief Felix Nnaji former President Imo State Congress of America (ISCA); Chief Ekele Amaefule; Convention committee chairman, Bishop Ambrose Iwu; Sir Anthony Uwakwe from New York City and Chief Chris Ejiofo who is the host of the convention.
