The sustainable Citizen Participation project in governance of the local community has continued to receive the attention of host communities in the Nigeria Niger delta as Hope Givers Organization working as sub-implementing partner to AfriHealth Optonet Association concludes the twenty four months fully funded SCP project by the United Nations Democracy Fund(UNDEF).
The project as conceived and implemented by Afrihealth Optonet Association is targeted at building the capacity of the host community on greater involvement of the locals in governance and project development. This is seen as tool to make the leaders more accountable to the indigenes and help drive the bottom to top approach in rural development across the 9 Niger delta states in Nigeria using eighty-one selected local government areas.
Disclosing the outcome of the Sustainable Citizen Participation (SCP), representative of Hope Givers Organization, Mr Arinze Nwankwo maintained that the SCP serves to improve the skills of the indigenes towards driving governance.
Continuing, he restated that in the course of the Programme,the twenty member Community Consultative Council(CCC) elected from the community’s nominated 50 persons stakeholders meeting were taught skills like negotiation, fund raising, Project Implementation and tracking as accountability tool, and others towards building efficiency in local governance.
The CCC members as part of the quick-wins initiated efforts at clearing the over-grown weeds at the abandoned Town hall building still under construction. The members were involved at getting the stakeholders in the community and beyond towards actualizing the desire of the indigenes, and presently involved in fund raising to complete the project.
Moreso,the CCC members as led by Mr Cardinal Nwaoha has been able to raise the consciousness of the populace to take ownership of the projects in the community.
Speaking on the project, the traditional ruler,His Royal Highness,Eze P.O Anyanwu praised the efforts of UNDEF and AfriHealth Optonet Association led by Dr Uzodinma Adirieje for the choice of Ohoba autonomous community in the project development. He called for the inclusion of more communities in subsequent phases of the SCP project.
