Peace Corps:Hope dim as Reps reject bill

The desire of some to join the Peace Corps and those who have undergone or undergoing training to consolidate on the paramilitary service may have been dashed as the House of representatives on Thursday failed to pass the bill.

The bill which came on for second reading through spirited efforts of Law makers like Mr Ossai Nicholas(PDP Delta) by outlining its benefit to the nation including employment and additional manpower that would be released in securing the nation but met stiff resistance from supporters of President Muhammudu Buhari.

The Pro-Buhari Law makers who came in numbers realising the presentation of the bill for a second reading opined that the President having vetoed same suggest his deep understanding the expected roles of the agencies and how it is already being filled and called for the support of all.

Musa Sarki,a lawmaker from Sokoto opined that “the solution to Nigeria’s security challenges and what will bring lasting peace is not by supporting peace corps bill but by supporting President Buhari to come for a second term”

On her part,Mrs Rita Orji(PDP Lagos) in her argument called for the establishment of the agency and more, use the recovered loot from ex-President Abacha to pay them could swing the emotions and votes either as majority in the chamber voted against in a committee session presided over by Rt.Hon Dogara.
