The deputy governor of Imo State,Prince Eze Madumere, has appealed to traders in Imo state to remain calm and law abiding in the midst of present challenges occasioned by dislocations and demolitions as hope is on the way.
The plea was made on tuesday in Owerri during the one year anniversary celebration and fund raising towards building a permanent secretariat mounted in Owerri,Imo State by the Imo State Almagamated Markets and Traders Association(ISAMATA) umbrella body of various market unions in the state.
According to Prince Madumere,”no nation jokes with her traders” as their existence acts as enabler for a flourishing industrial sector. He lamented over the present situation in Imo state that has forced some traders leaving the state for other states and pleaded that those still here to “remain calm and see the hand of God.Whatever that may have been lost would be recovered in many folds as help is on the way”.
The deputy governor assured the traders in Imo State of his desire to remain with them noting that some states with little or no oil and gas deposit like Anambra have continued to grow with investments from commerce.
The representative of the state governor and Commissioner for Non Formal sector and Market Development, Mrs Joy Mbawuike, while speaking assured the traders of continuous support from the state.
Earlier,in his welcome address by the President,ISAMATA,Imo State,Prince Joe Odikanwa said that the umbrella body came into place to galvanise the various market unions in the state towards coordinated growth and development of commerce. He also states that as part of her mandate remains fighting the course of traders towards advancing commerce in the state including sharp practices from various quarters.
Continuing,he allayed the fears of some noting that the body is never for political purposes but purely set to create a roboust relationship among market union and the local/state government in a win-win situation.
However, he noted that urban renewal is a good idea for the development of the state but, bemoaned the way and manner it is being carried out leading to challenges and losses encountered by her members, and called on the state government to always factor in the interest of markets and traders before such policy implementation.
The Chairman of the Occasion, Mr Chukwudi Onuoha, praised the traders for their entrepreneurial spirit, calling on them never to relent. He challenged them to never accept the second position as traders were more in number in this nation to change policy direction of government at all levels.
In a paper presentation made by Dr.Gabriel Onyekuru, on the theme:ISAMATA as a bridge builder,he challenged the traders to be more effective in their trade and services while listing out qualities expected of a good member of body.
Moreso, a governorship aspirant in the state under the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA),Mr Daniel Kanu, sympathized with the traders over the present situation in the state noting that the indigenes are contending with growing poverty and hunger occasioned through maladministration.
Among those in attendance were traditional rulers from across the state, business class, legislators and Political Party chieftains, and Executives of Market unions in the state.
