A youth development enthusiast and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Mr. Uchenna Ogbonna has joined the race for Oguta Constituency seat in the Imo State House of Assembly, even as he promised quality representation to the people of his constituency if voted into power in 2019.
Speaking with journalists in Owerri, Ogbonna, who hails from Izombe town in Oguta LGA of Imo State, said he had prepared himself for the race since 2011, promising to legislate laws that would better the lives of those in his constituency and change the orientation of the youths of the state towards self-reliance if elected into the Imo State House of Assembly.
He lamented that Oguta LGA over the years had never witnessed effective representation which he said climaxed under the incumbent representative.
"The major thing in going to the house of assembly is the issue of legislation and the person representing us in the House of Assembly has not been able to push any reasonable bill neither has he given our people effective representation. Because of that most Oguta youths have remained jobless. This is why people now think that Oguta youths are only good in thuggery and gangsterism. But we cannot continue to allow that be because majority of our youths are graduates and responsible members of the society. What some of them need is the little push that can be given to them to blossom as people of oil producing LGA", Ogbonna said.
He stated one of the reasons he came back to Nigeria was to ensure the youths of the area were not menace to the society and "I've found out that apart from what I've been able to do as an individual, I can actually do a lot more through politics and government platform".
Ogbonna, an American-based businessman said that apart from making laws to ensure that his constituency gets what is due to them, he vowed that he would use his position to better the lives of those in his constituency.
His words: “Part of my manifesto apart from making laws is to ensure that my constituency will get part of what is due to them in total. I will also better the lives of the Oguta youths, women and elders and ensure that there will be employment for everybody.
“What is going on about Imo state and our constituency is not new to us. We have got to be well represented. We need a fair representation whereby the need of this constituency as oil producing constituency will be handled, addressed and brought to the focal point. I know that I cannot do it alone. I want to count on the support and assistance of my people".
He said he would start giving the people of the constituency an effective representation through re-orientation of the mindset of the people that they deserve to be working and earning a living and by so doing would have nothing or little to do with gangsterism.
To achieve this, Ogbonna also promised to set up skills acquisition centres where youths could enrol to acquire skills to make them self-reliant while trust funds would be set up to assist students in their academic endeavours
