FUTO Owerri sets up panel to probe students’ riot

The management of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, has set up a seven-man administrative panel to probe the immediate and remote causes of last Friday’s riot by students of the institution.

Confirming this during an interview, yesterday, Vice Chancellor, VC, of FUTO, Professor Francis Chukwuemeka Eze, also disclosed that the panel was empowered to make commensurate recommendations in line with their findings.

Prof. Eze expressed shock at what he called “the violent demonstration and wanton destruction of the university property by the rampaging students.”

According to the VC, FUTO did not charge tuition fees for undergraduate students, like in all federal universities in the country, but quickly added that only municipal fees and other services are charged.

“There was no increase in the service fees payable, except the N7,000 upward adjustment in the ICT fee for ongoing upgrade, which was done after mutual understanding between the University Management and the Students Union Government, SUG,”, Eze explained.

While saying that FUTO was experiencing students unrest for the first time in the life of the institution, the VC also said that apart from the physical damage to equipment and structures, there were other destructions.Vanguard
