The traditional Rulers Council in Imo State is set to witness another round of battle as some Ezes have risen to challenge the Chairman of the State Council, His Royal Majesty Eze Samuel Agunwa Ohiri, while promising to use the coming Council election as directed by Governor Rochas Okorocha to change the traditional Institution.
The present battle against the leadership style of Chairman of the Council is being led by a member of his Executive and Vice Chairman, Owerri zone, His Royal Highness Eze Chidume Okoro,
Making open his position through Advertorials in some Owerri based Newspapers, HRH Eze Okoro condemned the way and manner the Council Chairman has chosen to suppress opposing views in the traditional Parliament and vowed that the Ezes can never be intimidated through autocratic style as presently adopted.
Moreso, the Ahiazu-Mbaise Local Government Area born traditional ruler expressed displeasure over the decision of HRM Eze Ohiri, a fellow contestant in the coming election to dictate the process by releasing rules targeted at disenfranchising greater number of the Council member through an introduction of 27 Member Electoral College.
He went on questioning the process of using only 27 members in a Council with over 600 members, and demanded the State government’s intervention towards free and fair electoral process that would be accepted by all the traditional rulers in Imo State.
Continuing, Eze Okoro while declaring his intention to challenge incumbent Ezeimo in the coming Council’s election faulted the use of Electoral College comprising 27 Ezes to elect the State Council Chairman as muted by the Eze Ohiri in their meeting of May 9, 2016 held in Owerri insisting that 27 traditional rulers would never confer popular choice among the Ezeship Council.
You may recall that HRM Eze Ohiri was appointed by Governor Rochas Okorocha in 2011 following the dissolution of the traditional Rulers Council led by HRM Eze Cletus Ilomuanya and which matter was challenged up to the nation’s Apex Court.
